Have you ever read about Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX (HB IX)? He was the second vice president of Indonesia who also served as head of government and King of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY Yogyakarta) since 1940. One of the Father of Boy Scouts contributions that would never be neglected by history is his donation to the new republic during the Indonesian National Revolution in 1945-1949. It was recorded he made a donation of approximately 6 million guilders to support the newly born Indonesia. The freshly independent government required funds for its leaders, employees, residents, and to finance warfare.

Comparable to the support of Sultan HB IX, the 12th King of the Sultanate of Siak Sri Inderapura, Riau, and titled Sultan Syarif Kasim II had also donated his wealth to the Republic. As he learnt the proclamation of Indonesian independence (As he learnt that Indonesia has proclaimed their independence), the Sultan of Siak who was very irritated by the presence of the Dutch invaders expressed his immediate support to Sukarno-Hatta and the new country. The Sultan (b. 1908) directly sent a telegram message to Sukarno declaring his full support for the republic along with the commitment to donate the wealth of the sultanate.

Funds donated by the sultanate that was located in eastern Sumatra were a lot: 13 million guilders. It equals to more than IDR 1 trillion in present-day currency. The Sultan also donated a sultanate crown, car, sword, and the heirloom kris, as well as 12 sultanate regions to the Republic of Indonesia. The area includes the East Coast of Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and the mainland that stretched to Deli Serdang in North Sumatra.

In alliance with the people of Aceh, he also granted funds for the purchase of Indonesia's first aircrafts, namely Dakota RI-001 Seulawah and Dakota RI-002 Seulawah. These aircrafts were the embryo of Indonesian Airways which is now known as Garuda Indonesia. Indonesia paid the highest reverence to the two Sultans who had not only contributed their powers, blood, and tears, but also their possessions. Sultan Syarif Kasim II was bestowed the title of National Hero of Indonesia in 1998, and later in 2003 Sultan HB IX received the same tribute.

Thus, can we the common folk become 'heroes' to our country since the physical struggle to gain independence had passed decades ago? You might not be a prince or princess of a sultan, living as millennials with all the stereotypes, but indeed we have a chance to be heroes like the Sultans.
